FAQ on BBQ Planking

What type of BBQs can you use planks on ?

BBQ Planks can be used on any type of BBQ - charcoal, gas or electric.  Follow the instructions from the BBQ manufacturer about cooking temperatures etc.

This is our charcoal BBQ that we use through the summer and when the sun comes out the rest of the year.

Why don't they burn ?

BBQ Planks must be soaked each time it is cooked on and the wet wood stops the wood from burning , however each time you use your plank the bottom will become more and more charred.

Why is cooking on wood better than normal barbecuing ?

Trying is believing ! We do a lot of demonstrations at Food Festivals etc and when someone asks this questions we always ask them to try either a piece of steak on an Oak BBQ Plank , Salmon on a Cedar BBQ Plank or a Prawn wrapped in Cedar or Cherry Wood Paper.

Food is more moist and tender and there is also the added layer of flavour from the wood and from whatever you put in the soaking solution.

Barbecuing is so much easier on planks : no charred or burnt food, fish doesn't stick or fall through the grill, no spitting or flare ups from fat dripping on the flames, different food types can be kept completely separate (great for vegetarians) , no more scraping and washing the grill after barbecuing and always great tasting and looking food.

What can you cook on planks ?

Anything you want !  The great thing about cooking on wood is experimenting with barbecuing different foods on different woods.

Create your own platters of food on a plank depending on what you like: fish, seafood, beef, poultry, pork, vegetables or fruit.

How much longer does it take to cook on ?

Your food is steamed and barbecued at the same time and will only take a few minutes more time to cook. Well worth the little extra wait.

How long does a plank last?

If you are competent barbecuer then your plank can last over 15 times. Our record holder, at the moment, is our steak Oak BBQ Plank which has been used over 30 times !

Your plank will char more and more after each use until there is more charcoal than wood. Your plank will infuse a tastier deeper woody charcoal flavour every time you use it until your plank disappears !  Then you buy another one and start all over again .

Do you have to soak my plank every time?

YES !  We recommend 1-2 hours before each BBQ so the wood has a chance to become fully saturated and therefore steam your food fully. Also the more saturated the wood the longer it will last.

What can I soak my plank in?

Water plus anything you want - whisky, wine, beer, cider, fruit juices, sherry, brandy, pernod, vodka, guinness, herb stock...have I missed anything ? Look at our recipe page for suggestions but feel free to experiment..

How do I clean my plank?

Scrub it with a brush and some mild detergent.

Where can I store my plank ?

Please make sure your plank is thoroughly dry before you put it away.

Are you bringing out other wood flavour?

We are always experimenting with new woods so we can develop more choice and give you the chance to try new flavours. The woods we use for each product depends on the size of the wood available.
